I know its hard to get away from the sun lately but we are mainly hiding from the heat, not the sun right?
The sun can actually help you be more healthy, stay healthy and even perform better. All you need to do is go outside and soak it up for about 15 minutes a day.
Vitamin D is very important in our bodies and is something that is not commonly in the foods we eat and as a result a little harder to get in our bodies. Luckily, the largest organ system in the body (the skin) can synthesize vitamin D from simply being exposed to sunlight for at least 15 minutes a day. I will give some tips on how to make this happen in a minute. First some ways that Vitamin D helps us:
- Helps your body use Calcium in the bones and joints. It can help prevent osteoporosis (Bone degeneration).
- Can prevent depression and improve mood.
- Can lower inflammation which will allow the body to function more efficiently and help prevent disease.
- Decreases risk of Cancer
- Helps your body synthesize and utilize steroid hormones (testosterone and estrogen)
- Slows down your bodies aging process.
How do we get more of this good stuff? Its really simple, especially since we live close to the equator and get LOTS of sun. Go outside and expose at least your face and hands to the sun. Ideally if you can get outside and put your feet on the earth (barefoot) and your face to the sun for about 10 minutes in the morning as the sun comes up. Getting outside with the rise of the sun will help your body wake up naturally as well as allow your body to regulate its ionic charge by getting in contact with the earth and its natural vibration. Think of this as grounding yourself. Its also a great time to take a couple breaths and prepare you body for the upcoming day.
You can get good sun exposure by taking a walk in the evening or simply grilling outdoors. While i understand that its hot out right now, we can all handle a couple minutes in the pure sunlight. Get creative with how you expose yourself.
One quick warning: Getting too much sun exposure can be detrimental to your health. Ease into to your exposure. As your skin darkens from sun exposure, its ability to produce vitamin D decreases. This is a good thing since in theory, the longer you are outside the darker your skin gets and and the less quickly you need to synthesize vitamin D.
So, go outside and soak up the sun!
